Outside the centres served by DHB hospitals there are various ways to access primary care.

• A patient should call their general practice in the first instance for advice on how to access after-hours services. 
• If a patient is not enrolled in the area, they can be advised to call any local practice and they will be directed appropriately. 

In most cases rural practices use Home Care Medical (HML) to provide telephone triage and direct patients as necessary outside usual business hours. 

In the case of an emergency patients should call 111.
