Where to get tested for COVID-19

Primary care providers such as general practices and WellSouth – are delivering COVID-19 testing across the Southern region.

Testing is being done at Community Based Assessment Centres (CBACs) and at a large number of general practices that have the capacity and space to safely do so.

Your general practice might be able to provide the test, so if you need to be tested call them first to ask.

Some practices are designated practices. They can provide testing for patients from other practices and for those who don’t have a doctor, as well as for their own patients.

Regardless of where you are tested, COVID-19 testing is free of charge.

If you think you should be tested for COVID-19, contact your own practice (if you are enrolled) by phone in the first instance, or Healthline 0800 358 5453.

You can also contact our COVID Call Centre by dialling 0800 VIRUS19. (0800 847 8719)

Please understand you will be asked assessment questions to see you meet Ministry of Health’s COVID-19 criteria. If testing is required, you will be directed to the most appropriate location for testing.

(Please note a small number of practices are not testing for COVID-19. Designated practices or CBACs across the district are providing support instead.)

Community Based Assessment Centres

Community Based Assessment Centres are dedicated COVID-19 testing clinics that have been set up in Dunedin and Invercargill, providing extra testing capacity for the Southern region. Staffed by nurses, pharmacists and doctors, CBACs are safe and you will be looked after quickly if you need testing. CBACs are open seven days a week, from 9 am to 4 pm. Monday to Friday and 9am to 12 noon weekends. But they’re not walk-in clinics and you should be referred there first.

Designated Practices

Designated practices are general practices that will see and test you, whether or not you are enrolled with that practice.

If for any reason you don’t want to go to you regular GP, you don’t have a doctor or don’t know who your doctor is, you can contact a designated practice to be assessed and possibly tested for COVID-19.

If you are an enrolled patient at a designated practice, you can continue to attend as you normally would.

You may notice a difference if you visit, as patients attending for routine appointments will be separate from those who are there for COVID-19 testing. This is to help keep everyone safe and healthy.

Remember, it is important to always call first.
