Trainee GPs begin training programme in Southern

February marks the start of the new academic year for the RNZCGPs, three-year General Practice Education Programme (GPEP), with 14 doctors choosing Otago and Southland for their regional scheme.
This year’s training began with two days of training (and an overnight) at Puketeraki Marae in Karitane, where the Southern Māori Cultural Education team delivered an interactive programme with a focus on Whānau, Tikanga, Te Reo, Whanaungatanga and Māori models of health – Meihana model and Te Whare Tapa Whā. The Māori Health Directorate will continue to support GP Registrar training with updates in years 2 and 3.
 "Feedback from  participants is that the marae training was a highlight of the orientation," says WellSouth’s Dr Aisha Paulose, Lead GPEP1 Medical Educator for Otago and Southland. "We are very gratful to the Puketeraki Marae for hosting us."
