Welcome to the Primary Care AI Resource Hub

As the healthcare landscape evolves, the adoption of technologies like Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) presents new opportunities to enhance patient care and improve workflows. However, it's essential to approach these tools thoughtfully and responsibly. WellSouth is committed to supporting our providers with the tools and guidance they need to safely navigate the complexities of AI. Our resources offer best-practice advice for using AI in primary care without compromising patient care or data security.

What is GenAI?

Generative AI is a powerful, emerging technology that offers new possibilities but also presents unique challenges. It is a subset of artificial intelligence (AI) that uses algorithms to generate new types of content or “outputs, including text, images, music, code, and voice. This technology analyses large datasets to identify patterns and make decisions, operating on "prompts" the users provide to instruct it. Unlike traditional AI, which focuses on recognising and processing existing information, GenAI creates new content based on what it has learned.

Available Resources

Click on the quick access menu below to navigate directly to the resources you need. Each section has different templates and examples to assist with embedding AI into your practice.

Implementation Tools

Incorporating AI technologies into your practice requires careful planning. Our resources provide guidance on setting up and managing GenAI tools, including information on best practice, risk mitigation strategies, and a summary checklist for those in practice management looking to set up GenAI within their practice.

Privacy and Consent

Patient consent and privacy standards are essential aspects that must be considered when using AI within your workflows. Patients should be fully informed about how their data will be used and protected to ensure they are giving true informed consent. The following resources will assist with ensuring your practice's use of AI complies with legal standards and respects patient rights.

Patient Information Resources

The following resource pack provides information for your patients and has been designed to help them make informed decisions regarding their consent for the use of AI in their care. Recognising that each practice will implement AI differently, we've provided these resources as a starting point. They are editable, allowing you to customise them to best reflect your specific use. Once these resources are tailored to your practice, we recommend reviewing them regularly.

Policy and Documentation

These policy and documentation resources are intended to assist you in developing your own comprehensive GenAI policies and procedures for your practice. With GenAI already integrated into many systems, such as Outlook, Microsoft Teams, and Adobe, it is essential for all providers to have a governance document, such as a GenAI policy, in place.

As GenAI technology continues to advance, we recommend providers to regularly review and update their own policies, documentation, and processes to ensure they remain current and effective. Continuous review and adaptation will help ensure that your practice stays aligned with the latest developments and best practices for GenAI technologies.
