If you know you need urgent care, please don’t wait. Call the general practice you are enrolled at. If they don’t have any available appointments at the centre, they may have an after-hours telehealth service, or you could call Healthline directly on 0800 611 116 for advice.

If you live rurally, you can also call Ka Ora for a same-day phone or video consultation for free. Ka Ora is available from 5pm to 8.30am on weekdays and round the clock on weekends and public holidays. Book online or call on 0800 2 KA ORA (0800 252 672).

In the main centres,

The Dunedin Urgent Doctors & Accident Centre on Filleul Street is open between 8am and 9pm, 7 days a week, 365 days. 

The Invercargill After Hours Clinic is located at Te Hau o Te Ora general practice on Clyde Street in Invercargill. The service will see patients from 6-9pm Monday to Friday and from 12-4pm on weekends – Saturday and Sunday – and public holidays.

Should you need urgent help beyond 9pm, please go to your local ED for care.

 

What is a medical emergency?

  • Chest pain or Tightness - this could also be felt in arm, jaw, neck or upper abdomen (tummy).

  • Difficulty breathing.

  • Choking.

  • Sudden weakness on one side or difficulty talking (this may be a stroke).

  • Fainting or unconsciousness (not being awake).

  • Severe pain.

  • Severe bleeding or bleeding that won’t stop.
