National Nurse Practitioner Training Programme – Sector Collaboration in Action
Tēnā koe,
As Chief Executives of PHOs across Aotearoa, we wanted to give you advanced notice of an announcement that will occur later today.
We are pleased to share that a consortium of six PHOs (Mahitahi Hauora, Pegasus, Pinnacle, ProCare, Tū Ora Compass Health, and WellSouth) has been selected to deliver the Nurse Practitioner Training Support Scheme (NPTSS) nationally over the next three years.
Nurse practitioners (Mātanga tapuhi) have advanced education, clinical training and the demonstrated competence and legal authority to practise beyond the level of a registered nurse. NPs can work autonomously and in collaborative teams with other health professionals to promote health, prevent disease, and improve access and population health outcomes in their area of expertise for patients and the wider community.
This scheme involves integrating these advanced practitioners into primary care teams to improve access, outcomes and continuity of care. While NPs contribute specialist nursing skills to the overall work of a general practice team; they will work alongside specialist GPs and other general practice team members.
This programme will support 180 registered nurses annually, with 120 places allocated to primary and community care. It offers a comprehensive package including funding, mentoring, and clinical supervision, and is open to eligible nurses across all health settings.
Given the number of NP places that are allocated to primary care as part of the overall schemes, general practice is a key partner in this new initiative and is well positioned to further develop the role of nurse practitioners.
This initiative reflects the power of sector collaboration. By combining our reach, expertise, and relationships, we will be able to deliver a scalable, equitable programme that supports both trainees and the clinicians who mentor them.
This is an exciting time in the world of primary care; therefore, we welcome your support in promoting this opportunity across your networks.
