Pertussis/Whooping Cough
A national pertussis (whooping cough) epidemic was declared in New Zealand on November 22, 2024, following a sustained increase in cases beginning on October 19, 2024. The epidemic is expected to continue for the next 1-2 years. Infants under one year are most vulnerable, with a high proportion requiring hospitalisation.
Recommendations:
-
Pregnant people: Should get vaccinated with Boostrix from 16 weeks of pregnancy to protect their newborns, according to Health New Zealand.
-
Infants: Should receive their primary series of pertussis vaccinations at 6 weeks, 3 months, and 5 months, according to Te Whatu Ora.
-
Extended family: Should be encouraged to get vaccinated as per the Immunisation Schedule
-
Healthcare workers: Should ensure they are vaccinated against pertussis.
-
Seek medical advice: If a cough ends with a "whoop" sound or vomiting, especially in babies, seek medical advice promptly.
