The ABC approach
The evidence is clear that the ABC (brief advice) approach is an important tool in the smoking cessation toolbox. An easy way to refresh your knowledge on delivering ABC is to complete the Better Help For Smokers To Quit online training, which takes only 30 minutes.
For a more comprehensive, 60-minute, in-person and in-practice version of the ABC training please email us, we may be able to arrange it: practicenetwork@wellsouth.org.nz.
Additionally, there is now NZ-specific guidance for health workers supporting patients who vape and want to stop, and to minimise the risk of taking up smoking after stopping vaping. The guidance outlines good cessation practices – including ABC - and summarises evidence on the health effects of vaping, and vaping in specific population groups (such as pregnant people and young people).
