The RNZCGP Foundation Standards indicators and assessments are managed by the Royal New Zealand College of General Practitioners (RNZCGP). These standards are the hallmark of quality for general practice across Aotearoa and are required for practices to qualify for government funding.
This Tips & Tricks series is designed to support practices in managing the ongoing work required to meet RNZCGP Foundation Standards and to help make assessment preparation easier.
16 April 2026 Indicator 12.1 Infection Control. Specifically Reprocessing Reuseable Medical Devices (RMDs)
The RNZCGP Foundation Standards require a full suite of policies that align with set standards of infection control procedures – NZS 8134:2021 and AS/NZS 5369:2023. See 12.1 Infection control | RNZCGP
This week’s tips and tricks, refer to the reprocessing of reuseable medical devices (RMD), and not the full Infection prevention requirements. Ensure your lead IPC person, and any other staff who participate in reprocessing RMDs, receive full training in the new standards.

Practices must maintain their Foundation Standards certification to continue operating as an accredited general practice.
Completing your assessment before your certification expires is essential. Delays may affect funding eligibility and can be particularly problematic for teaching practices, where certification delays may impact GPEP training hours.
